A Blank Page......
Harriet Miers, a blank page, yes this is one description of President Bush’s Supreme Court nominee. There are others that I won’t repeat, but let’s just concentrate on my description which can be summed up in one word----Pitiful.
I am so damned disappointed in this choice. I mean Janice Rodgers Brown was waiting in the wings and W pulled this pathetic rabbit out of the hat, shit. Where the fuck is Karl Rove the celebrated “liberal slayer”? Has everybody gone dead at the switch in the Whitehouse? There is only one upside to this nomination. Maybe she is the ultimate stealth judge, maybe she has one purpose and that is to hold the constitutional line.
I’m not going to dwell on this nomination. There are more noteworthy things happening in the world.
August Wilson, Black playwright, died today. Take some time to check out his work, you won’t be sorry. August was a self made man. After dropping out of school at the age of 16 because of the racist treatment he received, he finished educating his self at local libraries. August believed this was when his real education started, working menial jobs and pursuing a literary career he managed to have several poems published and in 1969 became active in the theatre and founded the theater company black Horizons on the Hill.
Stories like August’s remind us that excellence will not be denied, it will find a way to emerge. There has never been, nor will there ever be, a government program that can produce this kind of excellence. August’s success is repeated through out the black experience in America. During the worst moments of this nation’s history to the dawn of the civil rights movement, up until this moment, there have been men and women that have achieved regardless of the circumstances. This is not a black thing—it is an American thing. Let’s just hope America continues to be the place that men and women of all walks of life can defy the odds. I hope Harriet Miers knows what America is.
Take Care
